Skal Boston Visits Historic Newport, RI for their June Meeting

June 18 was a warm sunny day and perfect for an outing to beautiful and historic Newport, RI.  The venue for Skal Boston’s June meeting was the magnificent “Marble House” operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Marble House was built between 1888 – 1892 for Mr & Mrs William K Vanderbilt.  It was a summer house or “cottage” as Newporters called them.  It is a social and architectural landmark.  The house in 1892 cost $11 million dollars with $7 million spend on 500,000 cubic feet of marble.  On construction of the house Mr Vanderbilt gave the house to his wife as a 39th birthday present.  In 2006 Marble House was designated as a National Historic Landmark.

President Julie welcomed many members and guests from the Newport area along with our members who traveled to Newport for the day.  Lunch was served on the terrace overlooking the lawn and ocean.  A great time was had by all.
